Every kid has gone through an awkward phase, nobody gets to escape this terrible time in their lives, you just have to live through it! And hopefully, your family won’t bring it up if you ever become famous. Well, not every famous country artist has been so lucky- and new upcoming female power in country music, Kelsea Ballerini, is one of those people!
Kelsea is a Nashville native with deep Southern roots and a fierce bond with country music. She sang in church choirs growing up and even started taking dance lessons at 3-years-old, setting her up for her major success at 19 when she signed a deal with Black River Entertainment back in 2014, which included her debut single “Love Me Like You Mean It”.
As a 90’s kid, Ballerini admits to also loving the pop music genre. “I grew up on top 40 pop. I didn’t know what country music was, which is so funny because I grew up on a farm in East Tennessee” she shared with Radio.com.
She also admits her father made fun of her love for major 90’s pop stars like Britney Spears. She shared in a new interview with ET that Spears was her very first concert and she’d spend hours practicing her “Britney growl”, better known as vocal fry, so she could sound like the 90’s superstar.
As she grew older, Ballerini branched out into listening to the country genre. Once she heard “Stupid Boy” by Keith Urban, she decided to delve deeper into country music by listening to albums by Taylor Swift, Sugarland, and Dixie Chicks.
Thankfully she stuck with country! It certainly paid off considering she was nominated for Best New Artist at the 2017 Grammy Awards.
